What spray sealing is
A spray seal is hot bitumen binder sprayed onto a prepared and compacted base, with a layer of stone spread over it and rolled in. It seals the base from water and gives a durable, stony running surface.
Spray seal or asphalt?
A spray seal costs less per square metre than asphalt and suits long distances and lower-traffic areas. Asphalt gives a smoother, denser finish that handles turning traffic better, which is why it is the usual choice for house frontages, car parks and commercial areas. See asphalt driveways.
Rural driveways and farm roads
Long gravel driveways and farm roads that wash out, rut or throw up dust can be sealed once the base is shaped and compacted.
Resealing
Older sealed surfaces that have become bare, cracked or brittle can be resealed to renew the surface and keep water out of the base.

Can you seal my existing gravel driveway?
Often, yes, once the gravel base is reshaped and compacted. Send photos and the rough length and width.
Is a spray seal as smooth as asphalt?
No. It has a stonier texture. That is why it suits rural roads and long driveways more than house frontages.
